Making sense of IT (and life!)

Into the clouds…..

There has been a growing momentum in the IT market talking about cloud computing, software as a service or a variety of other terminologies.

Basically it all means that your applications sit somewhere else and that you access them across the internet (or a private version of the internet).

Now this isn’t really a new concept – that is how mainframes used to work!

However on balance this is an interesting proposition and means that, for example, rather than buy expensive software you can rent it at a much lesser cost (witness the CRM services offered by Salesforce.com and the on demand services offered by Oracle – at the extreme ends of the scale).

There are major confidence issues to be worked on before companies become comfortable with the notion of outsourcing all of their IT this way and it will be interesting to follow the development of this technology . Mind you the technology isnt new, if you have been using hotmail or googlemail (to name just two) then you have been serenely flying through the clouds for some time now.

From time to time I’ll come back to this and add further thoughts, in the meantime any comments welcome…

Banks and banking

At last there is some sanity on the horizon for poor customers. Having spent much of my working life in Financial Institutions I have looked on in dismay as banks have become less customer focussed and more gigantic profit machines – I’m not saying profit is wrong, far from it, but customer service has really suffered.

So its good to see that the monolithic structures will be broken up (even just partially) and that a more customer centric notion of banking will return – perhaps we’ll even get proper branch managers back. More of this to come as the story unfolds.

This blog will explore many things!

Initially it was going to be focussed on the wonders, mysteries and insanities that surround IT – however its a big world out there, hence the expansion to include life – not a trivial expansion.

Any comments or opinions expressed are, of course completely my own.
